Derived from the Algonquian word meaning "on the water", Occoquan has relied on the river for transportation and trade for over 250 years.

Just 25 miles south of Washington, DC, Occoquan remains true to its roots, but the city also gathers many day trippers coming from DC to enjoy its peaceful serenity on the river. Occoquan's cute historic district boasts a plethora of quaint shops, al fresco dining, and a picturesque boat dock.

10:30-11:30am: Manassas National Battlefield Park

On July 21, 1861, the first large clashing of the North and the South occurred overlooking Bull Run. A little over a year later, the same armies converged and the Confederates won, bringing them to the height of their power. These major battles changed the course of the war and the history of Manassas forever.

12:15pm- 1:45pm: Winery at La Grange

With countless award-winning white and red wines, the Winery at La Grange is a very popular spot on the weekends for locals and tourists alike. The winery's tasting room is contained within a historic three- story manor home built in the 1790s. The building has been through multiple owners, is said to be haunted by ghosts, and has spectacular views of the surrounding farmland.

2:15-3:15pm: Liberia Plantation

In 1825, Harriett and William Weir built a brick home on over 1,500 acres of land that eventually became known as "Liberia". When the Civil War broke out, their plantation was one of the largest and most successful in the region.

The house played a part in the War, being both a hospital and headquarters for General Beauregard. It has recently been restored to its previous grandeur, and visitors are welcome.
